Lee Insurance Founder featured in New York Historical Society exhibit
Andrew P. Lee, founder of Lee Insurance was featured at the recent New York Historical Society exhibition
on Chinese Americans for his role as a US Army officer in China during World War II.
He served as an intelligence officer in the China-Burma Theater. Fluent in four Chinese dialects and college educated in New York and Shanghai, in 1945 he accompanied Foreign Service officers to Yenan on the Dixie Mission–an important American attempt to liase with and assess the communist forces led by Mao Zedong.
Lee lived and worked alongside leaders like Mao, Zhou Enlai, and Zhu De, witnessing their military effectiveness and growing popular support. The U.S. government ultimately rejected the Foreign Services assessment that the communists would defeat Chiang Kai-shek's nationalists after the war and that the U.S. should stay neutral. Lieutenant Lee received a Bronze Star for his services.
